United States Beer Reviews
Although beer existed in the United States from its birth (and before), it wasn’t until Prohibition that the state of beer in America was truly united. Today, the United States is arguably the world’s most important beer market, where brewers enjoy the most freedom to practice and advance their craft. The market is a true melting pot of brewing styles and traditions, and the beer community is as vibrant as it is diverse. While things really got started during and as a result of the Prohibition Era (1919-1933), fermented drinks pre-date the country’s founding in 1776. Hailed as a land of opportunity, huge macrobrewing enterprises like AB InBev and MillerCoors co-exist alongside a growing number of small craft beer companies. A country built by immigrants, America has heavy European brewing influences. The number of influential breweries are too great to number, and the list continues to evolve as independent brewers push innovation in the craft and give the world more and more interesting lagers and ales to explore.
by Michael Larson | Belgian IPA, Colorado, Goblet, Great Divide Brewing Company, Tulip, United States, Wine Glass |
Purchased for a neighborhood get together as something ‘a little different,’ Belgica found its way into my glass just a bit before the crowd showed up. Like, three days. But it was a new beer to me, and new beers don’t sit untouched for too long in my back room mini...
by Team | Founders Brewing Company, Michigan, Pint Glass, Russian Imperial Stout, Snifter, United States |
John: I tend to anticipate high quality from Founders so when I picked up this imperial stout my expectations were high. I wasn’t disappointed. It appeared as a deep, rich brown/black making a statement from the beginning. The head was creamy light brown but...
by Taylor Birkey | American IPA, Buffalo Bill's Brewery, California, Mug, Pint Glass, United States |
I found a single bottle of Buffalo Bill’s Alimony Ale at my local Binny’s and grabbed it, as I had never heard a thing about the brewery or its beers, and it had a catchy label. I was also buying a handful of malty beers at the time so I wanted to have...
by Taylor Birkey | American Pale Ale (APA), Deschutes Brewery, Mug, Oregon, Pint Glass, United States, Wet/Harvest Hop Beers |
Tom and I recently cracked a bottle of Deschutes Brewery’s Bond Street Series Hop Trip, a fresh-hopped American Pale Ale. It comes as per usual in the familiar 650mL bomber, and has a nice label with an illustration of a truck carrying an overflowing load of...
by Team | Doppelbock, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Mug, Ohio, Pilsner Glass, United States |
Taylor: Malt. Here is a substance complementary to mankind. It makes beer sweet. It gives yeast something to munch on. It represents an endowment of rich flavors and hues. While almost all beer requires malt of some kind, few styles rely on it as heavily as the...
by Noel | American Barleywine, Indiana, Pint Glass, Snifter, Three Floyds Brewing Company, United States |
My twelve month saga begins. Ok…so it might end up being more like ten months, but who’s really counting? The goal: sample all twelve of Three Floyds’ seasonal (monthly) offerings…in the year they were brewed. The purpose: get familiar with one of the highest rated...
