United States Beer Reviews
Although beer existed in the United States from its birth (and before), it wasn’t until Prohibition that the state of beer in America was truly united. Today, the United States is arguably the world’s most important beer market, where brewers enjoy the most freedom to practice and advance their craft. The market is a true melting pot of brewing styles and traditions, and the beer community is as vibrant as it is diverse. While things really got started during and as a result of the Prohibition Era (1919-1933), fermented drinks pre-date the country’s founding in 1776. Hailed as a land of opportunity, huge macrobrewing enterprises like AB InBev and MillerCoors co-exist alongside a growing number of small craft beer companies. A country built by immigrants, America has heavy European brewing influences. The number of influential breweries are too great to number, and the list continues to evolve as independent brewers push innovation in the craft and give the world more and more interesting lagers and ales to explore.

I found this while roaming up and down the mirco-brewery aisles with a beer rating app in hand. I didn’t want to buy another beer that would be disappointing so I tapped into other’s opinions and found a good one without ever hearing about this brewer. The...

The more you understand something, the more appreciation you have. At least that’s my general feeling. With beer, it often goes the same way. Yesterday, I had the absolute pleasure of a personalized tour, meal and tasting at Emmett’s Ale House in Palatine, IL. I will,...

This one’s a gold medal winner. And not by my review, but by the Beverage Institute’s World Beer Championships of 2009. Anxious to put my yet-to-be-used pilsner glass to good use, I poured this Capital brew with anticipation. Pouring gently, but not timidly, the brew...

John: The thing I hate about this beer is that it’s hard to drink it — without chocolate! That’s the only thing I don’t like about this wonderful, genuine stout from the Northwest. I am a bit of stout snob (or at least I think I am). So much so...

The more you drink craft beer, the more you realize that certain breweries do certain things really well: their “core competencies” (for all you business types out there). Maybe it’s beer styles of a specific country (Goose Island); maybe it’s crafting traditional...

After a great coffee stout, but with still much of the evening ahead, I felt like a palate cleanser. A few weeks ago, an incredibly generous friend toted a couple of boxes into my home. He had surprised me with six Californian brews and a Chicago classic, all but one...
