United States Beer Reviews
Although beer existed in the United States from its birth (and before), it wasn’t until Prohibition that the state of beer in America was truly united. Today, the United States is arguably the world’s most important beer market, where brewers enjoy the most freedom to practice and advance their craft. The market is a true melting pot of brewing styles and traditions, and the beer community is as vibrant as it is diverse. While things really got started during and as a result of the Prohibition Era (1919-1933), fermented drinks pre-date the country’s founding in 1776. Hailed as a land of opportunity, huge macrobrewing enterprises like AB InBev and MillerCoors co-exist alongside a growing number of small craft beer companies. A country built by immigrants, America has heavy European brewing influences. The number of influential breweries are too great to number, and the list continues to evolve as independent brewers push innovation in the craft and give the world more and more interesting lagers and ales to explore.

On a recent pilgrimage to Door County, a handful of us stopped to pick up some coveted Ale Asylum beers once we crossed over into Wisconsin. For me, this trip to Discount Liquor in Milwaukee was about two things: Ale Asylum’s Madtown Nutbrown and New Glarus Moon...

Noel: If you’ve tried Half Acre’s phenomenal Daisy Cutter Pale Ale and felt it a little lacking in the malt department … then this beer’s for you. Ok, so Ginger Twin isn’t quite as good a red ale as Daisy Cutter is a pale (although the bottle artwork is awesome). But...

May 17th, 2011 marked a milestone for me. I can now proudly say that I’ve sampled the Yeti Imperial Stout Series. It took me two years as this particular brew seemed to elude me, but at last the four variations (see also Yeti, Oak-Aged, and Espresso Oak-Aged) have...

There are a lot of stigmas attached to canned beer. Everyone associates it with something different. For me, growing up in the “Rust Belt,” it was the workingman’s beer. For others, it became the fisherman’s beer, or the teenage party beer, or the cookout beer, or the...

I have a wood burning stove at my house which keeps the living room toasty during the cool winter months. In order to keep said stove fueled, I regularly head out to the backyard with my trusty double bladed axe to cut up some logs. Well, in case you have never...

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is quickly becoming a prime example for how a socially and environmentally responsible company can compete, and indeed succeed, against the careless corporations of America. Their flagship Pale Ale currently stands as one of the...
