Beer reviews and blog posts by Nate
Nate is fond of beer. His most memorable pint happened to be a Guinness in Sunderland, England in the fall of 2003. By day (and sometimes night) he works as a nurse in a Burn Intensive Care Unit in San Diego, California. He hopes his work may at some point take him to parts of the world where craft beer is about as well known and understood as Canadian geography is to the average American. Therefore, he is doing his part in partaking in the beverage as much as possible. Other interests include music, coffee, exploring, and traveling.

Yet another impressive ale from the brewery that is gaining ground in my book for the number one spot on my favorite brewery list. Wow, so consistent and impressive. Northwest Pale Ale it is. Quite the apt name for this beer. Aroma, body, flavor all scream northwest...

Well, here it is. This is the quintessential double IPA from California. We are hop heads out here. Everyone knows that and everyone out here loves Pliny the Elder. Double IPAs are not my typical go to. But I do go for beers that get a lot of talk. I’ve gotta judge...

One moment I’m sitting in my living room on a cool, February evening in San Diego and I pop the cap of an Alesmith bomber. I pour. Immediately I am transported to a pine forest. Lots of resiny pine going on here. Towering, resiny pines. Am I having a stroke? No,...

Bombardier Q400. 32.8 M length, 28.4 M Wingspan, 667 km/h speed. As you may have guessed these are not the specs of the beer I’m reviewing. They are in fact, some of the specs of the plane I find myself in as currently I am flying somewhere over central Ontario from...

This beer pours a golden, straw yellow like any Euro lager. As soon as you pop the cap you can smell the skunkyness. A few of the thoughts running through my head after the first couple sips: good flavor to the yeast, dry finish, fizzy, crisp, refreshing, memories of...

This beer is interesting and good. That was nice to find out as I was hoping for something with those two adjectives as I visited the store on Christmas Eve. I couldn’t just settle for a typical pale ale or something like that for such an occasion. After all, I was...
by Nate | European Pale Lager, Grolsch Brewery, Netherlands, Pilsner Glass |
I love Dutch lagers. If after work I get to come home and crack one open that is a good end to the day. Such is the case tonight and I’m already nearly finished with my choice for tonight: Grolsch Lager. This lager is crisp and refreshing with almost a bit of tartness...

I judge books by their cover. I judge beers by their labels. There, I said it. So, Estrella Damm Inedit happens to be the coolest label and bottle of beer that I’ve ever seen. I just had to try it. Inedit comes from the well-known Spanish brewery Estrella Damm out of...

I am on a visit to Chicago at the present. I don’t understand why this is so fun for me but I always look forward to a trip to the liquor store to see what is on the shelf that I can’t get back in California. This time I chose Dark Horse Brewery’s Oatmeal Stout. I...

Perhaps my favorite part about the experience of drinking beer is that there is a nearly inexhaustible variety to choose from. There is a beer for every mood, for every gathering, and yes, for every season. Most people are giddy with anticipation for the...
