The Eel River may not sound like an appetizing place, but don’t be fooled by the name. This northern California Brewery makes one satisfying IPA. Traditional IPA drinkers may not enjoy Eel River’s version, though. This beer lacked the hops that you normally find in an IPA. But what it lacked in hops it made up in balance. The Eel River IPA is a medium-bodied, well balanced beer that requires little effort. It’s one of the smoother IPAs I’ve enjoyed. Though a little on the sweet side, this IPA would be very refreshing on a warm spring afternoon or a nice accompaniment to a light dinner.

You’ll notice from the image above, the phrase “Certified Organic”. According to their website, Eel River Brewing Company was the first certified organic brewery in the nation. They’ve been organic since 1999. That’s way before being organic was cool. Since then they’ve used 100% organic ingredients in their brews.

The Eel River Organic IPA is a perennial medalist in the California State Fair Commercial Brewers Competition. In 2009, it took the silver medal just behind Eel River’s Blonde Ale. While I wouldn’t rank it at the top of the IPA chart, its organic nature and smooth finish make it a wonderful find.
