I’m sure at one point in the course of enjoying a tasty brew you have heard the term “Black & Tan.” This is referring to a popular drink using Bass Pale Ale and Guinness Draught. There are various methods of blending within the US and in other countries, but most versions show the separation between the beers. Regardless of the appearance, I’m sure we can all agree that it’s still a treat.
I thought it would be interesting to explore some different beers that might go with Guinness. Below are the more commonly known mixtures:
- Guinness + Bass Pale Ale = Black & Tan
- Guinness + Harp Lager = Half & Half
- Guinness + Blue Moon = Black & Blue
- Guinness + Smithwicks = Blacksmith
- Guinness + Newcastle = Black Castle
- Guinness + Strongbow Cider = Black Velvet
- Guinness + Hard Cider = Snakebite
- Guinness + Two Brothers Red Eye Coffee Porter = Black Eye
- Guinness + St. Pauli Girl = Black Beauty
- Guinness + Magic Hat #9 = Black Magic
- Guinness + Old Engine Oil = Black Gold
- Guinness + Milwaukee’s Best = Black Beast
- Guinness + Rogue Dead Guy Ale = Black Death
- Guinness + Ginger Ale = Guinness Shandy
- Guinness + Smithwick’s + Harp = Celtic Threesome
- Guinness + New Glarus Spotted Cow = Muddy Udder
Feel free to come up with your own tasty combination and name it … then post your creation!
I’ve also heard of “Snakebite” which is a Guinness and a Hard Cider
Probably, Guinness + Two Brother’s Red Eye Coffee Porter = Black Eye (This could get crazy…)
Any experience with the Black and Blue? The other ones sound great except the cider, but the Blue Moon and Guinness just doesn’t sound good to me.
The Black & Blue is good…at least worth a try. Finishes light and the way the two beers blend is cool to watch.
I used to really like the Black Velvets and Snakebites, but haven’t had one in a few years. May need to order one up soon!
Just rocked the classic Guinness & Bass with buddies after work at Coogan’s Saloon on Wacker in the Loop. Man, nothing beats the original Black & Tan combo…
Guinness + St. Pauli Girl = Black Beauty?
Guinness + Old Engine Oil = Black Gold?
Guinness + Magic Hat #9 = Black Magic?
Guinness + Orange Juice = Disgusting.
Guiness + milwaukees best = black beast
Guinness + Rogue’s Dead Guy = The Black Death
This combo would be magical if you served it lukewarm, methinks…
Also, if you mixed a Red Ale and an Oktoberfest, you could call it “Red October”.
And another I just thought of: Guinness + Boddington’s! What would you even call that? Armageddon?
Man. Guinness and Boddington’s would be insane. So good!
That would be interesting. I’m not sure it would look like a typical B&T though. I think you need a beer that is not nitrogen pushed to compliment Guinness. I want to try it though…
Guinness + Bud Light = Bud Light w/Guinness. I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Guinness & Guinness Blonde – Black & Blonde
The original Black Velvet was Guinness & Champagne. What has become black velvet was actually termed Poor Man’s Velvet (Guinness and cider – any cider/not specific).
Now with the loss of Bass except in the UK I understand. The original (Black and Tan) is replaced with a number of things that aren’t the same.
Frankly my favorite was Guinness and John Courage.
I always heard Guinness and Hoegaarden together referred to as a dirty hoe, please pardon the obscenity.
