Stella Artois seems to be a popular beer one among individuals who don’t regularly drink craft beer. My mother-in-law was making a trip up to see my wife and me and we needed to get some beer to enjoy for the weekend. While I did have some beer in the refrigerator, I didn’t want to share any of the micro brews that I was planning on reviewing. I, of course, want to make my mother-in-law happy so I got a six pack of one of her favorite beers – Stella Artois. While I didn’t enjoy the beer, I did get some brownie points.

I’m not sure why this beer is a favorite among the non regular beer drinkers I’ve been around. There isn’t anything special about it. It pours a watered down, golden color with a small, fluffy head that dissipated quickly. The smell is very skunky. It almost ruins the experience of drinking it because it is so bad. I was able to get past the skunky smell briefly and picked up some hints of grainy malts. The taste has some sweet malts with just a touch of hops. It is light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. It left a rather grainy aftertaste which I didn’t enjoy.

I don’t remember Stella Artois being this bad. It seems to taste worst every time I have it. It could be because I wasn’t enjoying it on a hot summer day. In the future, I’d rather save a few bucks and get a Bud Light or Miller Light which taste better anyway. But this summer at a BBQ, if someone tossed one my way, I wouldn’t turn it down. If you can get past the skunky smell, you might enjoy this simple beer.
