Stella Artois seems to be a popular beer one among individuals who don’t regularly drink craft beer. My mother-in-law was making a trip up to see my wife and me and we needed to get some beer to enjoy for the weekend. While I did have some beer in the refrigerator, I didn’t want to share any of the micro brews that I was planning on reviewing. I, of course, want to make my mother-in-law happy so I got a six pack of one of her favorite beers – Stella Artois. While I didn’t enjoy the beer, I did get some brownie points.
I’m not sure why this beer is a favorite among the non regular beer drinkers I’ve been around. There isn’t anything special about it. It pours a watered down, golden color with a small, fluffy head that dissipated quickly. The smell is very skunky. It almost ruins the experience of drinking it because it is so bad. I was able to get past the skunky smell briefly and picked up some hints of grainy malts. The taste has some sweet malts with just a touch of hops. It is light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. It left a rather grainy aftertaste which I didn’t enjoy.
I don’t remember Stella Artois being this bad. It seems to taste worst every time I have it. It could be because I wasn’t enjoying it on a hot summer day. In the future, I’d rather save a few bucks and get a Bud Light or Miller Light which taste better anyway. But this summer at a BBQ, if someone tossed one my way, I wouldn’t turn it down. If you can get past the skunky smell, you might enjoy this simple beer.
ABV: 5.0%
Grade: C
that’s a shame … i mean, stella is just a euro pale, but i find it more refreshing and flavorful than a lot of the rest. how old was the bottle you drank … and did it ever get left in the sun?
Oh the perfectly happy man lets me down with a “C” on one of my favorite pale lagers. Or maybe I’ve just been blind and need to have my horizons expanded… what would you recommend I try in this category? (Since those summer bbq’s are just around the corner).
Pretty brutal, here. I seem to have more fond memories of this brew than that, but I’ll have to go back and sip with more consideration to see where it really stacks up.
Stella is better on tap.
Carlos: don’t forget about the ever popular Emmett’s Munich (munchin) Light!
I will say…beers like Stella, or any beers packaged in green or clear bottles, don’t have any protection from the blue light wavelengths that skunk beer. Only brown bottles do. And skunking can happen in a matter of seconds. So I’m not saying, I’m just saying. It’s a good thing to keep in mind for anyone in the future if you’re reviewing or just enjoying a beer packaged in a green or clear bottle.
Tom, Munich Light was such a delight(ful) suprise… minus that bad batch that tasted like popcorn butter had been added. (batch? is that proper beer terminology?)
Noel, Have you seen the selection of craft beers at Poor Phill’s within half a block of my apartment??? WE shoould go sometime soon… hollar at me.
I’ve been quite disappointed with Stella Artois, considering all the hype. I occasionally go back and try it again, just in case I was remembering wrong. I would definitely like a little more taste.
Ehh… Not the best beer I’ve ever had but not the worst either. 4/10
I like Stella Artois.
I saw this beer at a restaurant last night, and thought I’d try it. Honestly, it’s the worst beer I’ve tasted in years — maybe ever. Actually, it had no taste other than what I can only describe as something mildly reminiscent of creamed corn mixed with watered-down whey. Two sips were enough, so I ordered a glass of water and left the remainder of the foul liquid sitting in the glass.
This beer was so awful that I’m actually online right now trying to satisfy my curiosity as to why the stuff’s even made, let alone consumed. To each his own, I guess, but I’m baffled as to why anyone could like this stuff.
Just started drinking this beer I think it really good I’m used to Budweiser budlight I’m ready these reviews saying its not good I would like to no a better one to ttry thank u for any suggestions
I like Stella. And I’ve drunk a lot of beers, including of the ‘craft’ variety and enjoy ales etc. Yes there are more complex, tastier, fancier, fruitier, beers out there, but it does what it does fine. Standard refreshing Lager that’s a bit tastier than some lower abv ones. Personally, unless it’s literally off or kept terribly, I don’t believe I’ve had a bad beer (maybe that’s tad generous?!). Just generally all on a gradient from ok ones to amazingly nice ones. I understand the big brewer congolmerate bashing, no one wants one firm to rule the world with an iron fist and all that, but it actually tastes fine. As does most cold lager.
Stella Artois is pretty good with something to eat, like a big sandwich. However, I will probably not buy it again because it does not have a twist-off top. I often like to drink a portion of a bottled beer, put the cap back on (which keeps the carbonation), and drink more later. Can’t do that with Stella.
Stella Artois choses Matt Damon, I choose a different beer. F you Anhauser – there a lot of options and your political opinions DO make a difference! Have a good life.
