A friend of mine came over the other night and brought me a few beers from around the world since he knew I was reviewing beers for the Perfectly Happy Man. I was intrigued by the Lion Lager because its slogan is “The Legendary Lion.” However, after drinking it, this beer was more like a mangy stray cat.
It poured a light golden color with a small head. The smell was very mild. The only scent that really stood out was yeast. The bland smell set the tone for the beer. It had a mineral taste – perhaps copper. It was difficult to taste anything else because of this metallic presence. It was very boring with a watered down flavor. It was highly carbonated and hit the tongue sharply.
While a beer from Sri Lanka may sound exotic – there is a reason this country isn’t known for its beer. I won’t be drinking this one again unless I’m in the mood for some metallic tasting cat urine, which to be honest, isn’t very often.
ABV: 4.8%
Grade: F
I couldn’t agree more. This stuff is just awful. Their stout, however, is pretty damn good.
I second that Bergman, the stout is really good. Sadly the Lion Lager was amazing after spending 5 months on the Indian subcontinent. Although King’s beer (only 12 oz. I think) from Goa isn’t terrible.
