The Great Waters Brewing Co is nestled in the quaintest part of downtown St. Paul on the corner of the “Hamm” building. Right there you have rich beer history. St. Paul has a long history of beer making and beer pride so when we entered into the GWB my expectations were high. First thing I noticed was the brewery behind the bar enclosed in glass so I could see two fermination tanks! The beer is made on sight. They boast a number of “Cask Conditioned Ales” and CO2 “Pushed Beers”. I went for the darkest, stoutest I could find. The Black Watch Oat Stout “is a full bodied stout brewed with shelled malted oats and roasted barley”. It had a light head and a dark rich color that was very smooth. The aroma was rich with hints of coffee, chocolate and caramel. About half way through the meal I had another selection called “Brown Trout” it too was great but the Black Watch Oat was my preference. The owners realize that for most of us one beer in not enough in a place with so many good choices so they say “If you need help deciding which one to order, try them all with our beer sample flight”. That one my list for next time visit GWB.
